How to pay Rhode Island estimated taxes.
Rhode Island collects its own estimated tax through the Rhode Island Division of Taxation, separate from the IRS. Here’s who needs to pay, when, and how to pay online.
Do you need to pay?
You must make estimated payments if your Rhode Island income tax for the year is reasonably expected to be $250 or more in excess of allowable credits, whether or not you make federal estimated payments.
Underpayment interest is charged on the amount by which your payments and credits fall short of 80% of each installment when it is due. Rhode Island follows similar Internal Revenue Code exceptions, which you claim on Form RI-2210. The 2026 voucher worksheet lets you base your estimate on the smaller of your 2026 estimated tax or your 2025 Rhode Island tax.
If you underpay: 12% per year for 2026 on delinquent personal income tax (Advisory 2025-23).
For how to pick a safe amount, see how much to pay in estimated taxes.
Deadlines
Four equal installments due April 15, June 15, and September 15, 2026, and January 15, 2027. This matches the federal schedule. You can skip the January 15, 2027 payment if you file your 2026 return by February 15, 2027 and pay the full balance with it.
| Payment | Due |
|---|---|
| 1st | April 15 |
| 2nd | June 15 |
| 3rd | September 15 |
| 4th | January 15 of the next year |
A date on a weekend or holiday moves to the next business day. Pay at least two business days early.
Paying Rhode Island, step by step
What you need
- Nothing to set up. Rhode Island Tax Portal (guest payment) takes payments without an account.
- Your Social Security number and a copy of last year's Rhode Island return.
- Your bank routing and account numbers.
Start at Rhode Island Tax Portal (guest payment), Rhode Island's official payment site.
- Go to the Rhode Island Tax Portal at taxportal.ri.gov.
- Choose the same-day guest payment option. It does not require a Portal account or a PIN.
- Select personal income tax and identify yourself with your Social Security number.
- Choose an estimated payment for tax year 2026, enter the amount, and enter your bank account details.
- Submit and save the confirmation.
Other ways to pay: Pay by credit or debit card (Visa, American Express, MasterCard, Discover) through the State of Rhode Island card payment site linked from tax.ri.gov; card payments carry a fee that goes to the processor. You can also mail a check or money order payable to the Rhode Island Division of Taxation with the RI-1040ES coupon to One Capitol Hill, Providence, RI 02908, or pay through tax software. Registered Portal users can pay from their account; first-time registration needs a PIN sent by postal mail.
Rhode Island will not fill these payments in for you. Your preparer has to enter each estimated payment on your Rhode Island return. Keep your own record of the date, amount, and confirmation number.
Extension payments
Form RI-4868 gives an automatic six-month extension to file. You only need to file it if you owe tax with the extension. To be valid, it must show a proper estimate of your 2026 Rhode Island tax, and any balance must be paid by April 15. The extension does not extend the time to pay. You can file and pay the extension on the Tax Portal, and you attach a copy of Form RI-4868 to your return when you file.
Make this year's first estimated payment as a separate transaction, marked as an estimate for the current year.
Good to know
- First-time Portal users must wait for a PIN that arrives by postal mail, so use the guest payment option if a due date is close.
- Rhode Island has an elective pass-through entity tax (Schedule PTE), and entity estimates are paid on Form BUS-EST on the same quarterly dates.
- Larger business registrants fall under an Electronic Filing Mandate that requires electronic payment.
