How to pay Pennsylvania estimated taxes.

Pennsylvania collects its own estimated tax through the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue, separate from the IRS. Here’s who needs to pay, when, and how to pay online.

Do you need to pay?

For 2026 you must make estimated payments if you expect to owe at least $430 in tax after withholding and credits (equal to $14,000 of income not subject to employer withholding), and your withholding and credits will be less than the safe harbor amount. The income threshold rises to $17,000 for 2027 and $20,000 for 2028.

You avoid the underpayment penalty if your timely payments and credits equal at least 90% of your 2026 tax (or 90% of the actual tax on income earned in each installment period), or the current 3.07% rate times the net taxable income on your 2025 PA-40. The prior-year option is only available if you filed a full-year resident 2025 return. There is no high-income adjustment.

If you underpay: 7% per year (daily rate 0.000192) for 2026.

For how to pick a safe amount, see how much to pay in estimated taxes.

Deadlines

April 15, June 15, and September 15, 2026, and January 15, 2027, at 25% each. This matches the federal schedule. If you first meet the requirement later in the year, you pay 50%, 75%, or 100% at the next due date.

Paying Pennsylvania, step by step

What you need

  • Nothing to set up. myPATH takes payments without an account.
  • Your Social Security number and a copy of last year's Pennsylvania return.
  • Your bank routing and account numbers.

Start at myPATH, Pennsylvania's official payment site.

  1. Go to myPATH. You do not need to log in.
  2. Scroll below the Log In box to the Payments panel and select Make a Payment.
  3. Choose the Estimated/Extension Payment option for personal income tax.
  4. Select the account type, the payment type (Estimated Payments), and tax year 2026.
  5. Pay by ACH from your bank account (routing and account number) or by credit or debit card, then submit.
  6. To check on the payment later, use Find a Submission in the Additional Services panel on the myPATH homepage.

Other ways to pay: Check or money order payable to "PA Dept. of Revenue" with the PA-40 ES (I) voucher, writing the last four digits of your SSN and "2026 PA-40 ES" on it, mailed to PA Department of Revenue, PO Box 280403, Harrisburg PA 17128-0403. Phone payments through ACI Payments (1-800-2PAYTAX, jurisdiction code 4800) cost 2.85% on credit cards ($1 minimum) and 1.85% on debit cards ($3.95 minimum).

Pennsylvania will not fill these payments in for you. Your preparer has to enter each estimated payment on your Pennsylvania return. Keep your own record of the date, amount, and confirmation number.

Extension payments

Pennsylvania grants up to 6 months. If you owe no PA tax and have an approved federal extension, you get the same extension without filing anything. If you owe tax, pay it and request the extension: paying through myPATH (Estimated/Extension Payment) submits the request electronically, or mail Form REV-276 with a check. Without a federal extension, file REV-276 before the due date. The extension does not extend the time to pay.

Make this year's first estimated payment as a separate transaction, marked as an estimate for the current year.

Good to know

  • Payments of $15,000 or more must be made electronically, or you face a penalty of 3% of the payment, up to $500.
  • Most Pennsylvania municipalities and school districts levy a local earned income tax, and self-employed people usually make separate quarterly estimated payments to their local tax collector.
  • The prior-year safe harbor uses this year's rate times last year's taxable income, and it is not available if you were not a full-year resident last year.
  • The estimated tax income threshold is rising each year ($14,000 for 2026, $17,000 for 2027, $20,000 for 2028).
