How to pay Ohio estimated taxes.

Ohio collects its own estimated tax through the Ohio Department of Taxation, separate from the IRS. Here’s who needs to pay, when, and how to pay online.

Do you need to pay?

You should make estimated payments if your estimated 2026 Ohio tax liability (total tax minus total credits) minus Ohio withholding is more than $500.

No interest penalty if your timely payments and withholding cover at least 90% of your 2026 tax or 100% of your 2025 tax shown on a timely filed 2025 return. There is no higher percentage for high incomes. First-time filers cannot use the prior-year option.

If you underpay: 7% per year for 2026 (statutory interest rate), charged on each late or short installment.

For how to pick a safe amount, see how much to pay in estimated taxes.

Deadlines

April 15, June 15, and September 15, 2026, and January 15, 2027, at 25% of the required amount each. This matches the federal schedule.

Paying Ohio, step by step

What you need

  • Nothing to set up. OH|TAX eServices guest payment takes payments without an account.
  • Your Social Security number and a copy of last year's Ohio return.
  • Your bank routing and account numbers.

Start at OH|TAX eServices guest payment, Ohio's official payment site.

  1. Go to OH|TAX eServices and, in the Individual tile, select Make an income payment. No OHID login is needed.
  2. On the Individual Payments page, enter your last name, Social Security number, Payment Type (Estimated), and email, then select Next.
  3. Choose the tax year for the estimated payment.
  4. Under Payment Options, choose Electronic Check (no fee) or Credit/Debit Card (2.65% or $1, whichever is greater), enter the details, and select Next.
  5. Review and select Submit (or Pay for a card), then save the confirmation code.

Other ways to pay: Check or money order payable to "Ohio Treasurer of State" mailed with the Ohio Universal Payment Coupon (OUPC); write the tax year, "IT 1040," and the last four digits of your SSN on the memo line. Card payments are processed by ACI Payments, Inc. Payments are not accepted by phone.

Ohio will not fill these payments in for you. Your preparer has to enter each estimated payment on your Ohio return. Keep your own record of the date, amount, and confirmation number.

Extension payments

Ohio has no extension form. If you have a federal extension, your IT 1040 and SD 100 are due October 15; check the extension box on your Ohio return. The extension does not extend the time to pay, and interest is due on tax not paid by April 15. Pay online by choosing the Extension payment type in OH|TAX eServices, or mail a check with the OUPC.

Make this year's first estimated payment as a separate transaction, marked as an estimate for the current year.

Good to know

  • Many Ohio cities levy municipal income taxes with their own estimated payments, filed with the city or its collector (such as RITA or CCA), not the state.
  • If you live in a school district with an income tax, you make separate SD 100 estimated payments; pay them separately from IT 1040 payments on the same portal.
  • Married taxpayers unsure of filing status should pay separately, because payments are only applied to the SSN on the payment and are not split later.
  • Paying other states? See the payment links for every state's official site, and the federal walkthrough.
