How to pay Maryland estimated taxes.
Maryland collects its own estimated tax through the Comptroller of Maryland, separate from the IRS. Here’s who needs to pay, when, and how to pay online.
Do you need to pay?
You must make estimated payments if you expect your income to produce more than $500 of Maryland tax (state plus local) above your Maryland withholding. Separately, if you receive $500 or more in prizes, lottery, raffle, or gambling winnings with no Maryland tax withheld, you must file Form PV and pay in full within 60 days.
You avoid underpayment interest if you make four timely quarterly payments that each equal at least one-fourth of either 90% of your current-year tax or 110% of your prior-year tax. Maryland uses 110% of prior-year tax for everyone, regardless of income.
If you underpay: Interest of 0.9011% per month (10.8133% a year) on underpayments for periods after December 31, 2025, according to the Comptroller's Form 502UP instructions.
For how to pick a safe amount, see how much to pay in estimated taxes.
Deadlines
At least one-fourth of your total estimated tax is due April 15, 2026, with the rest due June 15, 2026, September 15, 2026, and January 15, 2027. This matches the federal dates and equal installments. You can skip the January payment if you file your 2026 return and pay the full balance by January 31, 2027.
| Payment | Due |
|---|---|
| 1st | April 15 |
| 2nd | June 15 |
| 3rd | September 15 |
| 4th | January 15 of the next year |
A date on a weekend or holiday moves to the next business day. Pay at least two business days early.
Paying Maryland, step by step
What you need
- Nothing to set up. Maryland Tax Connect (Make an Estimated Payment) takes payments without an account.
- Your Social Security number and a copy of last year's Maryland return.
- Your bank routing and account numbers.
Start at Maryland Tax Connect (Make an Estimated Payment), Maryland's official payment site.
- Go to mdtaxconnect.gov. Maryland Tax Connect replaced iFile and the old payment system on September 1, 2026.
- Under Individuals in Quick Links, select Make an Estimated Payment. You do not need to log in.
- Enter your name and Social Security number, plus your spouse's if you file jointly.
- Choose tax year 2026, enter the amount, and enter your bank routing and account numbers for a direct debit.
- Review, submit, and save your confirmation number.
Other ways to pay: Direct debit from your bank account is free. You can also pay by credit card through the Comptroller's site (the card processor charges a fee, but Maryland does not publish the rate on Form PV). Or mail a check payable to Comptroller of Maryland with Form PV, writing the last four digits of your SSN on the check.
Maryland will not fill these payments in for you. Your preparer has to enter each estimated payment on your Maryland return. Keep your own record of the date, amount, and confirmation number.
Extension payments
If you get a federal extension and expect to owe nothing, Maryland gives you an automatic six-month extension without a separate request. If you owe, pay what you expect to owe by April 15 using Form PV, or online, and the payment also requests the extension. An extension gives you more time to file, not more time to pay. Interest runs on any tax you have not paid by April 15.
Make this year's first estimated payment as a separate transaction, marked as an estimate for the current year.
Good to know
- Your estimate includes county or Baltimore City income tax on top of state tax. In 2026 the local rate runs from 2.25% to 3.30% depending on where you live.
- Maryland Tax Connect went live September 1, 2026. Payments you scheduled in iFile before the switch still process, so do not repeat them in the new portal.
- Pass-through entities make their estimated payments on Form 510/511D, not Form PV.
- Farmers and fishermen (at least two-thirds of gross income) can make one payment by January 15, 2027, or file and pay in full by March 1, 2027.
