How to pay Kansas estimated taxes.
Kansas collects its own estimated tax through the Kansas Department of Revenue, separate from the IRS. Here’s who needs to pay, when, and how to pay online.
Do you need to pay?
You must make estimated payments if your Kansas income tax after withholding and credits will be $500 or more and your withholding and credits may be less than the smaller of 90% of your 2026 tax or 100% of your 2025 tax.
No penalty if each payment is on time and your payments and credits are at least 90% of your 2026 tax (66 2/3% for farmers and fishers), at least 100% of your 2025 tax (if that return covered 12 months and showed a liability), or 90% of the tax on annualized income. Kansas has no 110% rule for higher incomes.
If you underpay: Figured on Schedule K-210 at the Kansas interest rate: 8% a year (0.67% per month) for 2026. Any part of an underpayment that runs into 2027 is figured at the 2027 rate.
For how to pick a safe amount, see how much to pay in estimated taxes.
Deadlines
Four installments due April 15, 2026, June 15, 2026, September 15, 2026, and January 15, 2027. This matches the federal schedule. You can skip the January payment if you file your 2026 return and pay in full by January 31, 2027.
| Payment | Due |
|---|---|
| 1st | April 15 |
| 2nd | June 15 |
| 3rd | September 15 |
| 4th | January 15 of the next year |
A date on a weekend or holiday moves to the next business day. Pay at least two business days early.

- Select Individual as the entity type and individual income tax as the tax type.
- For payment type, select Estimated Payment.
- Enter your SSN, the tax year, and the amount, then your payment details.
- Submit and save your confirmation.
Other ways to pay: Mail the K-40ES voucher for the right quarter with a check or money order payable to Kansas Individual Estimated Tax, PO Box 3506, Topeka, KS 66625-3506. You can also pay through the Kansas Customer Service Center.
Kansas will not fill these payments in for you. Your preparer has to enter each estimated payment on your Kansas return. Keep your own record of the date, amount, and confirmation number.
Extension payments
Kansas has no separate extension form. If you get a federal extension (Form 4868), you automatically get a Kansas extension; enclose a copy of Form 4868 with your return. It does not extend the time to pay. To avoid a separate penalty, pay 90% of your tax by April 15 and the rest by the extended date. In the payment portal, choose Extension Payment, or mail Form K-40V with the extension box checked.
Make this year's first estimated payment as a separate transaction, marked as an estimate for the current year.
Good to know
- Farmers and fishers can make one payment by January 15, 2027, or skip estimates by filing and paying in full by March 1, 2027.
- Use the voucher for the quarter you are paying; vouchers are quarter-specific and photocopies are not accepted.
