How to pay New Jersey estimated taxes.

New Jersey collects its own estimated tax through the New Jersey Division of Taxation, separate from the IRS. Here’s who needs to pay, when, and how to pay online.

Do you need to pay?

You must make estimated payments if you expect to owe more than $400 in New Jersey income tax after subtracting withholdings and other credits. This applies to residents and nonresidents.

You avoid underpayment interest if your withholding and timely estimated payments cover at least 80% of your 2026 tax, or 100% of your 2025 tax if your 2025 New Jersey return covered a full 12 months. New Jersey's current instructions show no higher prior-year percentage for high incomes. No interest is charged if you had no tax liability on a full-year prior-year return.

If you underpay: Interest at 3% above the average predominant prime rate, charged for each month or part of a month the underpayment exists and compounded annually. The Division reviews the rate quarterly and changes it only after a cumulative change of more than 1%. The latest Form NJ-2210 schedule shows 10.00% starting January 16, 2026.

For how to pick a safe amount, see how much to pay in estimated taxes.

Deadlines

April 15, 2026, June 15, 2026, September 15, 2026, and January 15, 2027, in four equal installments (or pay the full amount by April 15). This matches the federal schedule. You can skip the January 15, 2027 payment if you file your 2026 return by February 15, 2027 and pay the full balance.

Paying New Jersey, step by step

What you need

  • Nothing to set up. Individual Income Tax online payment service (e-check and credit card) takes payments without an account.
  • Your Social Security number and a copy of last year's New Jersey return.
  • Your bank routing and account numbers.

Start at Individual Income Tax online payment service (e-check and credit card), New Jersey's official payment site.

  1. Go to the Division of Taxation Pay Tax page and choose the option to make an estimated tax payment.
  2. Enter the Social Security number and date of birth of the first person listed on your New Jersey return. No account is needed.
  3. Indicate the return type the payment is for (Resident NJ-1040, Nonresident NJ-1040NR, or Fiduciary).
  4. Choose e-check (no fee, can be scheduled in advance for each quarterly due date) or credit card (processing fee applies).
  5. Enter the payment amount and bank or card details, submit, and save your confirmation. Do not mail a voucher for an online payment.

Other ways to pay: Credit card by phone at 1-888-673-7694 (a processing fee applies; the percentage is not published on the instructions). Check or money order payable to "State of New Jersey - TGI" mailed with Form NJ-1040-ES to the Revenue Processing Center, PO Box 222, Trenton, NJ 08646-0222. Check or money order in person at a Regional Information Center.

New Jersey will not fill these payments in for you. Your preparer has to enter each estimated payment on your New Jersey return. Keep your own record of the date, amount, and confirmation number.

Extension payments

New Jersey grants a 6-month extension to file. If you have a federal extension and have paid at least 80% of your tax by April 15, you do not need to file Form NJ-630; otherwise file NJ-630 by April 15 (online at nj.gov/taxation or by mail). The extension does not extend the time to pay, and it is retroactively denied if less than 80% of your final tax was paid by the original due date. Online extension payments must be made by e-check or credit card.

Make this year's first estimated payment as a separate transaction, marked as an estimate for the current year.

Good to know

  • The current-year safe harbor is 80% of this year's tax, lower than the federal 90%.
  • You can skip the January installment if you file your return by February 15 and pay in full.
  • If your business elects the Pass-Through Business Alternative Income Tax (BAIT), your share of the credit counts toward your payments when New Jersey figures underpayment interest.
  • Married couples must make every payment under the primary Social Security number (the one listed first on the return) to get proper credit.
  • Moved this year? You may owe estimates to both New Jersey and your other state for the part of the year you lived or earned income in each.
  • Paying the IRS too? Follow the federal walkthrough. Other states each have a guide of their own.
