How to pay Indiana estimated taxes.

Indiana collects its own estimated tax through the Indiana Department of Revenue, separate from the IRS. Here’s who needs to pay, when, and how to pay online.

Do you need to pay?

You must make estimated payments if you expect to owe $1,000 or more in combined state and county income tax for the year that isn't covered by withholding.

You avoid the penalty if each installment is at least one-fourth of the smaller of 90% of this year's tax or 100% of last year's tax. If your federal AGI is over $150,000 ($75,000 married filing separately), the prior year amount is 110%.

If you underpay: 10% of the underpayment for each period, figured on Schedule IT-2210. Interest on unpaid tax is 7% for 2026.

For how to pick a safe amount, see how much to pay in estimated taxes.

Deadlines

Four installments due April 15, 2026, June 15, 2026, September 15, 2026, and January 15, 2027. This matches the federal schedule.

Paying Indiana, step by step

What you need

  • Nothing to set up. INTIME takes payments without an account.
  • Your Social Security number and a copy of last year's Indiana return.
  • Your bank routing and account numbers.

Start at INTIME, Indiana's official payment site.

  1. Go to INTIME. You don't need to log in.
  2. In the Payments panel, click Make a payment.
  3. Use Non-bill payments (or Bill payments if you have a voucher with a Letter ID).
  4. Choose Bank Payment (no fee) or Credit Card (fee).
  5. Select Estimated payment as the payment type and the 31-Dec-2026 period, then enter the date and amount.
  6. Submit and save the confirmation number. Your payment isn't complete until you get one.

Other ways to pay: Mail Form ES-40 with a check or money order payable to the Indiana Department of Revenue, or use a preprinted voucher from your software or preparer. Don't mail the ES-40 if you pay by card or eCheck. Card payments carry a processor fee.

Indiana will not fill these payments in for you. Your preparer has to enter each estimated payment on your Indiana return. Keep your own record of the date, amount, and confirmation number.

Extension payments

If you have a federal extension, you automatically have an Indiana extension; otherwise request one in INTIME or with Form IT-9 by the original due date. Your extended deadline is 30 days after the federal extended date (November 16, 2026 for 2025 returns). It does not extend the time to pay: the penalty is waived only if you pay at least 90% by the original due date and the rest, with interest, by the extended date. Pay through INTIME or with the IT-9 voucher.

Make this year's first estimated payment as a separate transaction, marked as an estimate for the current year.

Good to know

  • Your estimate includes county income tax as well as state tax, and the ES-40 asks you to split the payment between them and enter your county code.
  • If you file your return and pay in full by January 31, you won't be penalized for the January 15 installment.
  • Penalties are figured quarter by quarter, so a large January payment doesn't fix earlier shortfalls.
  • Moved this year? You may owe estimates to both Indiana and your other state for the part of the year you lived or earned income in each.
  • Paying the IRS too? Follow the federal walkthrough. Other states each have a guide of their own.
