How to pay Hawaii estimated taxes.

Hawaii collects its own estimated tax through the Hawaii Department of Taxation, separate from the IRS. Here’s who needs to pay, when, and how to pay online.

Do you need to pay?

You generally must pay estimated tax if you expect to owe at least $500 in Hawaii tax for 2026 after withholding and credits, and your withholding and credits will be less than the safe harbor amount.

You avoid the penalty if withholding and timely estimates cover the smaller of 60% of your 2026 tax or 100% of your 2025 tax (2025 return must cover 12 months). Hawaii does not publish a 110% high-income rule.

If you underpay: Penalty of 2/3 of 1% per month or part of a month (about 8% a year) on the underpayment, figured on Form N-210.

For how to pick a safe amount, see how much to pay in estimated taxes.

Deadlines

Four equal payments due April 20, June 20, and September 20, 2026, and January 20, 2027. This differs from the federal schedule: each Hawaii date is the 20th, five days after the federal date.

A date on a weekend or holiday moves to the next business day. Pay at least two business days early.

Paying Hawaii, step by step

What you need

  • Nothing to set up. Hawaii Tax Online (HTO) takes payments without an account.
  • Your Social Security number and a copy of last year's Hawaii return.
  • Your bank routing and account numbers.

Start at Hawaii Tax Online (HTO), Hawaii's official payment site.

  1. On the Hawaii Tax Online homepage, under Quick Links, choose Make Payment. You do not need to log in.
  2. Select Individual Income as the tax account type and Estimated Payment as the payment type.
  3. Enter and confirm your SSN, the 2026 filing period, and your address.
  4. Choose bank debit or card, enter the amount, submit, and save the confirmation.

Other ways to pay: Bank debit payments on Hawaii Tax Online are free; card payments carry a fee (rate not published on the pages reviewed). You can also mail a check payable to Hawaii State Tax Collector with Form N-200V to Hawaii Department of Taxation, Attn: Payment Section, P.O. Box 1530, Honolulu, HI 96806-1530.

Hawaii will not fill these payments in for you. Your preparer has to enter each estimated payment on your Hawaii return. Keep your own record of the date, amount, and confirmation number.

Extension payments

Hawaii grants an automatic six-month extension to October 20 with no form, as long as you are due a refund or you pay your properly estimated tax by April 20. Properly estimated means at least 90% of the tax you end up reporting on your return. If you pay less, you get no extension and owe penalties and interest. The extension does not give you more time to pay. Pay online through Hawaii Tax Online or mail the payment with Form N-200V.

Make this year's first estimated payment as a separate transaction, marked as an estimate for the current year.

Good to know

  • Hawaii's estimate and return due dates fall on the 20th, not the 15th.
  • The current-year safe harbor is 60%, well below the federal 90%.
  • Married couples should make separate estimated payments for each spouse, even if they will file jointly.
  • You can skip the January 20 payment if you file your 2026 return by January 31, 2027 and pay the full balance.
  • Moved this year? You may owe estimates to both Hawaii and your other state for the part of the year you lived or earned income in each.
  • Paying the IRS too? Follow the federal walkthrough. Other states each have a guide of their own.
